10. Two Graves

As Barry and Molly are on the brink of waging war on the Caliphate, Leila makes a bold political move, setting up a "government in exile," with the support of Al-Qadi. Cogswell, who is about to be shipped back to the U.S. to be court-martialed, advises her to seek asylum from the State Department and leave the country. After an act of unexpected violence and the arrest of her sister, she has reason to question how much longer she can hold out. She soon has unexpected new allies, but may also face a close betrayal. Meanwhile, Barry has Daliyah force-fed to thwart her hunger strike. Sammy speaks some unwanted truths to his family as they attempt to celebrate what would have been Emma's 19th birthday, and Molly makes an unexpected request of Barry. The conflict in Abuddin threatens to turn into a bloody civil war – with Sammy, Halima and Haitham in the middle of the student protest at which Leila plans to announce her new government, and Ahmed with the Army that's come to quash that protest. As violence breaks out, Barry and Daliyha face a final reckoning in their relationship. She feels defeated, but soon gains strength from an unexpected source. And on the eve of the war, Barry finds himself at odds with General Maloof... and his own future.

As Abuddin descends into chaos in the wake of the indefinitely delayed elections, Fauzi speaks out against Barry... and Barry orders him arrested for treason. Before the arrest can be carried out, Daliyah persuades Fauzi to leave so he can be a voice of dissent, and he bids her an emotional farewell. With her son safely in Fauzi's care, she takes a public stand against Barry, denouncing him as a tyrant.... and she is soon brought to the palace for a confrontation with Molly, who forces Barry to make a decision. Halima attempts to remind Barry of the ideals he once stood for, and subsequently organizes a protest... but her fellow activists have far bloodier intentions. As Nafisa's brother Wafiq is sentenced to death, he asks her for an unthinkable favor. Siddiq resigns as Governor of Ma'an to join Leila and Al-Qadi, and allows the refugees to enter the city and rejoin their families. In an attempt to regain control, Barry gives General Maloof authority to shut down Leila's opposition – risking a full-blown civil war – and Ahmed joins to pressure his mother to surrender... while Sammy declares his opposition to his father.

Molly returns to Abuddin with a hardened resolve to pursue her daughter’s killer. Mahdiya is entrusted with a critical job. Leila and Cogswell relish in a brief escape from the world -- only to find that escape is impossible. Barry is thrown by Molly’s cold determination and haunted by images of the daughter he failed. Stuck between the woman he loves, the woman he loved, and the daughter he lost, Barry takes a hard line with the country.

Haunted by Emma's death and his failure to kill Ihab, Barry pushes away his closest allies – including Daliyah, after she sides with Fauzi's public disagreement with him – and he pushes for a military assault on the Caliphate, against Cogswell's advice. Leila leaves the government in protest of Barry's actions and forms an unlikely and risky partnership with Al-Qadi, who Barry has banned from running for President; she offers to make him her Prime Minister if she is elected President. When Barry learns of the meeting, it increases his paranoia; when he tries to banish her from his life, she finally tells him the secret that will always bind them together. Leila and Cogswell are blackmailed by someone who has photos of them together; Safiya offers to pay him off, but Cogswell takes radical action. Haitham has removed his blog from the internet, much to the consternation of his students; he subsequently applies for a job in Dubai, much to Sammy's consternation. Halima finds her leadership among her fellow activists undermined when her Western-style dress and romantic relationships are called into question. As the Caliphate ramps up plans to invade Abuddin, Ihab must convince the Caliphate council, who are hesitant about the invasion plans, that he is motivated by more than just personal revenge. When Cogswell learns the time and location of Ihab's marriage to Mahdiya, Barry plans an attack... motivated by his own desire for revenge.
6. Truth and Dignity

As violence sweeps Abuddin, Fauzi puts his feelings on the line, asking Daliyah to marry him, leaving Daliyah – who is having an affair with Barry – conflicted. Shortly afterwards, the Truth and Dignity hearings are attacked by terrorists, and Daliyah barely escapes with her life. In the aftermath, Barry authorizes mass arrests and the turning away of Syrian refugees, while Daliyah pleads with him not to kill anybody in her name. Haitham, who has been writing blogs blaming Barry for the violence, is arrested, outraging Sammy – who knows about Barry's affair with Daliyah. And Haitham is horrified when he learns that Sammy has confessed their forbidden relationship to Barry, and angrily breaks things off with him. Barry allows Nusrat a proper burial; he and Ahmed become closer, and Ahmed begs to be of service. Ihab gains a dedicated new follower, Mahdiya – a psychology student with whom he becomes close. Leila's relationship with Cogswell creates a wedge between her and her sister, who believes her relationship with the American is politically dangerous. And Al-Qadi enacts a risky plan to broach peace, secretly contacting Ihab – but it backfires terribly, with severe repercussions for Barry's Presidency and the election.
5. A Rock and a Hard Place

Leila is unhappy when Daliyah calls her to testify in the Truth and Dignity Commission during her Presidential campaign, especially since Leila is currently polling second, behind Fauzi. And Leila warns Daliyah not to rely on Barry's love... even as Fauzi is falling for Daliyah. Molly, unable to take the pain brought on by Emma's death and the fallout from her subsequent lust for vengeance, decides to get herself help... help that includes leaving the palace, and the country. In the wake of thwarted terrorist attacks carried out by those enraged by Barry's gassing of Ma'an, Barry is convinced by General Maloof to ban open prayer at the University – causing a severe backlash. At his wife Nafisa's urging, Al-Qadi speaks out against Barry's violence and restriction of religious freedom, while trying desperately to keep violence from breaking out when the military shows up at his rally. Haitham also makes clear to Sammy he disagrees with Barry's new policies, while Halima decides that Al-Qadi's calls for peaceful prayer aren't enough. Leila’s campaign heats up... as does her relationship with Cogswell. Cogswell, seeing the way the wind is blowing in the election, makes an overture to Fauzi. And bereft and alone, Barry turns to Daliyah for comfort.
4. A Prayer for Our Daughters

In the wake of Emma's death, Barry tells Cogswell he wants Ihab and Sheik Abdullah dead... just as Al-Qadi launches his campaign for President, saying he wants a land of peace and tolerance. Fauzi visits Barry for the first time since Barry's confession to comfort him on the loss of his daughter, and tell him he's gong to run for President. Molly becomes obsessed not only with killing Ihab, but with retrieving Emma's body – a tall order; she begins to fall apart under the strain of her grief. Leila's estranged sister, Safiya, comes to visit, though her reasons are more mercenary than familial. As Sammy and Haitham give in to their desires, Fauzi and Leila launch their political campaigns in earnest; Fauzi preaches hope and tolerance, while Leila is advised by her campaign manager, James Kipfer, to run on fear. Soon after, she confesses a family secret to Ahmed. And when Ihab and Abdullah enter a building Cogswell identifies as a terrorist training camp, Barry gives an order that threatens to throw the country off course, leading to violent protests.

Molly's plan to trade herself for Emma is discovered and co-opted by Cogswell – and there will be consequences for many, including Al-Qadi. Fauzi visits Daliyah as the Truth and Dignity hearings commence, wanting to know more about the night Samira died; the two become close, and Fauzi is emboldened to hope for a romantic future. As Sammy and Haitham's forbidden and dangerous romance grows, Halima faces public blowback for her ideals. Meanwhile, as Jamal lies dying, Ahmed is his best hope for a kidney transplant; conflicted, Ahmed looks into his father's past. And Ihab, pushed into a corner, lashes out to claim for himself the only justice he feels he can have.

Barry worries that the presence of Cogswell and his American troops will undermine his authority with Abuddianian citizens. A grieving Ahmed buries Nusrat in an unmarked grave – all that Leila will allow – as Jamal, still bedridden and under constant medical care, is returned to the palace. Sammy enrolls in a class on the history of Abuddin... and a spark of attraction grows between him and his professor, Haitham. Fauzi returns to Abuddin, and his student, Halima, suggests he run for President of Abuddin.... and Barry agrees. But it's only Barry's confession of his role in Samira's death that persuades a devastated Fauzi to run. As former lovers Cogswell and Leila become reacquainted, Cogswell asks Leila – now the Foreign Secretary – to persuade Barry to accept help from the U.S. While Ihab, who has escaped to Caliphate territory in Syria, is given an opportunity for revenge on Barry when Sheik Abdullah abducts the family of Molly's driver, Jalal; Molly escapes, but Emma is abducted... spelling terrible consequences for the future of Abuddin.

With Jamal’s life in danger and Abuddin on the verge of plunging into chaos, Barry is urged by both Exley and Molly to step forward as interim President before a coup takes place. Leila and Ahmed are placed under house arrest at the palace by the military, who want the Al-Fayeeds to be put on trial, and Barry and Rami have no choice but to agree in order to keep the loyalty of the army. Barry addresses the nation as the new President and sets the stage for democratic elections. However, swept up in the tides of revenge, army leaders overstep their bounds in securing peace – including the arrest of religious leader Sheik Al-Qadi, who is accused by Siddiq of encouraging his followers to support the Caliphate during the occupation. Barry visits Daliyah with a controversial plan to break the cycle of revenge in Abuddin, and gives her a leading role in his plan, one that will bring her close to him; she reluctantly accepts, even as she uneasily deals with her newfound reputation as a martyr of the revolution. And Barry's plans may have the seeds of their unraveling planted before he even begins. As Leila angles for a position in the new Abuddin, Cogswell, an American General who shares history with her, arrives.
