Nella Germania dei primi anni Quaranta, il tredicenne Ernst Lossa, figlio di un commesso viaggiatore rimasto orfano, è un ragazzo brillante ma disadattato. Classificato come "non educabile", a causa della sua natura indomabilmente ribelle finisce in un ospedale psichiatrico gestito dal dottor Veithausen.
