Wilhelm Voigt a bel et bien existé. En 1906, cet artisan et repris de justice, affublé d'un uniforme de capitaine plus ou moins seyant, prit le commandement d'une troupe de gendarmes, pénétra dans la mairie de Köpenick, fit arrêter le maire et confisqua la caisse municipale. Le monde entier rit de ce coup de maître qui se moquait du respect de l'uniforme prussien et de l'esprit de soumission qui régnait sous Guillaume II.
