Cuando Sir Clifford Chatterley regresó de la II Guerra Mundial, lo hizo invalidado a causa de las graves heridas que sufrió. Esta discapacidad hace que con el tiempo sienta cierta carga de culpabilidad respecto a su esposa, quien, puesto su imposiblidad, no puede disfrutar de los goces del cuerpo. Es por ello que le sugiere que debe buscar a un amante provisional para satisfacer sus necesidades. Constante sigue amando a su marido y no se atreve a aceptar esa libertad que generosamente él le ha concedido. Hasta que un día conoce al nuevo guardabosques de la finca, un hombre llamado Oliver Mellors, cuyo atractivo físico le conducirá a dejarse llevar e iniciar una aventura extramatrimonial.
