Julien Dechaumes ist Bürgermeister eines kleinen französischen Dorfes und hat große Pläne: Durch den Bau eines Kultur- und Sportzentrums will er sein Dorf zu einem modernen Freizeitort machen. Doch dabei stellen sich ihm einige Hindernisse in den Weg. Auf dem Baugrundstück steht nämlich ein alter Baum, den Lehrer Marc um jeden Preis retten will.
