Kaspar Almayer is een Nederlandse koopman in de jaren 50 in Maleisië. Ondanks de revolutie tegen de Engelse bezetters leeft hij teruggetrokken met zijn handel. Hij hoopt dat zijn geliefde dochter Nina ooit met een rijke man zal trouwen. In al zijn hebzucht, trots en vooroordelen stort hij hen beiden in het ongeluk. Gebaseerd op het boek van Joseph Conrad.
